Bari - A Town on the Adriatic Coast

Glorious food, Folklore, Beautiful Scenery and Cities that will leave you in awe.
Visiting Alberobello, the Caves of Castellana, Polignano a Mare, Matera and Cisternino.

7th July – Wednesday

Meeting at the airport at 9:30am to leave on a Rynair direct flight at 11:30am to Bari, arriving at 12:50pm. From here we will find a coach waiting for us to take us to our hotel. We will be given our rooms and we go for a walking tour. The port-city, Bari, lines the shores of the Adriatic Sea. It is known for its precarious streets that wind up like in a labyrinth. We will enjoy the most stunning views at the Lungomare Promenade and walk in the old town. A visit to the Basilica di San Nicola, an 11th-century structure is a must as it also holds the remains of St Nicholas. We will visit Corso Vittorio Emanuelle, Corso Cavour, Via Sparano da Bari and Via Manzoni which are the popular shopping district in Bari surrounded by beautiful coffee shops, cafés and restaurants.

8th July – Thursday

Today we will visit Alberobello, a quaint town known for the Trulli architecture which the locals have preserved and upheld. Deriving the techniques from the prehistoric era, the Alberobellos built their homes and buildings with tapered roofs using the soft limestone. The whitewashed walls of the Trulli homes are truly enchanting to see and worth stopping for a photo shoot. Following Alberobello we will go to the Grotte (Caves) di Castellana (entrance extra), a good opportunity to enjoy one of the most amazing natural wonders of Puglia. Full of natural heritage of inestimable value to Italy as they began to form about 90 million years ago. During the exploration, we will be at a constant temperature of around 16° to 18°. Later we will head to Polignano a Mare that brims with rich history dating back to the Arab and Norman rule. There will be time to stroll around and to have a swim.

9th July – Friday

Today, after breakfast, we will go to Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which holds an extensive series of cave dwellings (‘i sassi’) first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian Monks. Matera was the 2019 European Capital of Culture. Following Matera we will visit Cisternino. The speciality here is that the butcher cooks the meat you choose there and then. Amongst the specialities are the famous ‘bombette’, thin slices of pork, in particular capocollo or veal. If you prefer, it is spread, stuffed, rolled up, a few minutes in the typical oven and you will taste the street food of the Apulian cuisine! One can eat outside on beautifully decorated tables situated in the narrow roads of the old part of the town.
